1. The Shop Economy & Purchasing Expected Value (EV)
In Slay the Spire 2, gold is a strictly finite resource. Every shop presents a high-stakes trade-off between purchasing a game-defining Rare/Shop relic versus buying card removals to accelerate draw velocity.
| Relic Rarity | Base Gold Cost (A0–A5) | Ascension 6+ Cost (+15%) | Strategic Purchasing Benchmark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Common Relic | 150g ± 5% | 172g ± 5% | Only buy if immediate survivability solves the next Elite (e.g., Anchor, Bag of Marbles). |
| Uncommon Relic | 250g ± 5% | 287g ± 5% | High target priority; includes engine cornerstones like Horn Cleat and Kunai. |
| Rare Relic | 300g ± 5% | 345g ± 5% | Run-defining game changers; saves ~50+ HP across the entire run (e.g., Incense Burner, Dead Branch). |
| Shop-Exclusive | 160g–310g | 184g–356g | Unique utility items like Medical Kit and Orange Pellets that neutralize status cards and debuffs. |
The Golden Removal Rule: The first card removal in a run costs 75g, scaling by +25g per subsequent removal (+15% on A6). Buying a Common relic for 172g effectively costs the equivalent of two early card removals. Unless the relic offers immediate lethal protection against an upcoming boss, deck compression through removals remains statistically superior.
2. STS2 Wax Relics & The Toy Box Melt Order
Slay the Spire 2 introduces Wax Relics—temporary artifacts with immense passive bonuses that melt away as rooms resolve. Managing their expiration sequence is a core optimization axis:
Melt Mechanics
Each Wax Relic possesses 3 to 5 "Wick Charges". Completing an encounter consumes 1 Wick Charge. When charges hit zero, the relic melts into inert Slag, which can either be traded to the Merchant or reforged by The Regent.
Toy Box Synergies
The Toy Box relic allows you to freeze one active Wax Relic per act, halting its wick countdown. Freezing an overpowered relic like Waxen Hourglass (+8 AoE damage every turn) transforms a temporary buff into an Act-wide carry engine.
3. Co-op Relic Routing & Party Ownership
In multiplayer expeditions, relics fall into two distinct functional categories: Party-Shared Passives and Carrier-Specific Multipliers. Misallocating a relic to the wrong player wastes 50% to 80% of its computational value:
- Party-Shared Passives (Anchor, Preserved Insect, Pantograph): These relics trigger universally regardless of who holds them. Giving them to the party member with the lowest current HP or the dedicated shop-buyer minimizes distribution friction.
- Carrier-Specific Multipliers (Shuriken, Kunai, Champion Belt): These relics trigger strictly based on the holder's personal card actions. Kunai (+1 Dexterity per 3 attacks) must ALWAYS be assigned to The Silent (who casts 4–8 Shivs per turn) rather than The Ironclad (who casts 1–3 heavy strikes).
4. Relic Turn Trigger Resolution Order
When multiple relics activate simultaneously at the start of combat, Slay the Spire 2 resolves them in strict FIFO (First In, First Out) order based on acquisition timestamp, with high-priority overriding systems:
- Pre-Combat Setup: Preserved Insect reduces Elite HP by 25% before any player stats are calculated.
- Hand Generation: Bag of Preparation (+2 cards) resolves before Ring of the Snake, ensuring card limits do not discard excess draws.
- Turn 1 Defensive Buffs: Anchor (+10 Block) generates armor prior to status card applications or innate debuffs.
