Slay the Spire 2 First-Run Guide

Early Access climbs are messy. This guide prioritizes stable decisions over theorycraft — and points you to the right calculator when the math gets noisy.

1. Pick a character for learning, not flexing

Your first serious runs should maximize feedback. Prefer a roster member with readable win conditions (clear damage plan + clear defensive plan). Use the characters overview to compare HP, starters, and themes — then commit for several runs instead of hopping every death.

2. Act 1: path for information, not greed

  • Take fights that teach enemy patterns before hard elites if you are under-rolled.
  • Prefer removals when the deck feels clogged with low-impact starters.
  • Shop only when you know what hole you are buying for (block, draw, or damage).

3. When to open a calculator mid-run

Situation Tool
Wondering if you’ll see a key card next turn Draw probability
Necrobinder soul/doom lethal math Soul calculator
Regent forge investment vs immediate power Forge simulator
Co-op pairing / secondary roles Co-op synergy

4. Build principles that survive patches

  1. One primary win condition, one defensive plan, one energy/draw engine.
  2. Do not add “interesting” cards that dilute both plans.
  3. Re-evaluate after every elite — if the deck cannot block a spike, fix block first.

5. Learn systems once

Keywords and resources change between patches. Keep mechanics notes open while you climb, then return to tools for concrete numbers. For multiplayer, read co-op multiplayer before blaming RNG.
